Top Layer
Asphalt shingles serve as the top layer of your roofing system. If you peek underneath your roof shingles, you see beams that run from your gutters to the crown of your building. Sheets of plywood sit on top of the beams. Then you have a thin sheet of tar paper that adheres to the shingles. This paper layer is called an underlayment. Asphalt shingles go on top of this layer of tar paper to keep water off of lower layers.

Adhesives
One of the main advantages of asphalt shingles is the strip of adhesive on each shingle. It’s the same basic asphalt tar that goes into road construction to help keep the blacktop intact. Asphalt adhesive does two things. First, it helps prevent shingles from flying off the roof during wind and rain. Second, asphalt forms a water-tight seal that prevents rain from reaching the interior layers of your roof.
Overlapping Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles overlap each other from top to bottom. In between the overlapping layers is a small strip asphalt sealer. Asphalt activates with heat. This means the hotter the weather gets, the better the asphalt holds. Once the asphalt heats up and forms the adhesive layer, it creates a permanent bond between the shingles. This bond keeps shingles from blowing away in the wind in addition to forming a waterproof seal.

Nails
Once a roofing company lays out an asphalt shingle, installers use nails to keep the shingle attached to the plywood layer underneath. Roofing companies use special galvanized roofing nails to attach each shingle. We put anywhere from four to six nails in each shingle to make sure they stay put and don’t pull up from the plywood.
